Angels walk away from draft smiling
Team says it scored in a 'shallow' pool
By Doug Miller / MLB.com

Anaheim Angels round-by-round picks

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim vice president and general manager Bill Stoneman said the 2002 draft was about as good as it could have been for the Angels.

"We're happy," Stoneman said. "Maybe this draft was a little shallower than we've had in a long time, but we like the guys we drafted."

Lefty Joe Saunders of Virginia Tech was the player the team was happiest about.

Saunders, 20, was the team's first pick with the 12th selection in the first round. Saunders, whose fastball has been clocked from 88 to 93 mph, was described by Angels director of scouting Donny Rowland as having "moxie" and "ice running through his veins when he's on the mound." He's also viewed as being a player who can rise to the big-league level quickly.

Saunders signed with the club on Wednesday. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Despite a claim a few weeks ago that the pitching-rich organization might be leaning toward position players, the Angels went for pitching in the first three rounds and in 10 of Tuesday's first 22 picks.

On Wednesday, the Angels took 17 more pitchers in the final 28 rounds.

"When it comes to our turn and you've got two guys you grade out the same, this year we would probably go with a position guy," Stoneman said.

"But most of the time we felt there was a clear difference and we went with the best guy available on our charts, which were pitchers."

Still, the organization says it has plucked some potential pearls from this year's shallow waters.

Jordan Renz, the team's fourth-round pick out of a high school in Oklahoma, is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound outfielder with what Rowland calls "the best pure bat speed in the draft."

And SS/2B Javy Rodriguez, whom the Angels selected in the fifth round, led Miami to the College World Series in 2001 and is known as a smart, gritty player, perfect for Anaheim's 2002 mold.
