Riggs up for Most Bizarre Moment

Vote for This Year in Baseball awards
Adam Riggs doesn't have much big-league experience, and he wasn't up with the Angels for very long in 2003 before something truly historic happened to him.
Riggs, a 31-year-old journeyman, was inserted into the Angels' lineup in left field in an Aug. 16 home win against the Detroit Tigers.
Riggs came on the field with a sleeveless jersey that read "A-N-G-E-E-S" across the front and didn't realize it until his hysterical teammates sat him down in the dugout between innings and broke the news to him.
"They were all laughing at me," Riggs said. "I thought they were just messing with me. When I saw it, I was pretty shocked. That's the last thing you'd expect."
Riggs threw the jersey in the wash after the game but said the next day that he would have liked to have kept it for posterity.
"I would love to have it," he said. "It's a great thing for me to remember. I'd put it in a frame and put in my house. What a great story I have now."
Unfortunately, Riggs didn't get the jersey, which was most likely cleaned and burned by the Angels' clubhouse staff.
Still, it was a moment he'll never forget.
His manager, Mike Scioscia, had an interesting explanation for the gaffe.
"To welcome the community spirit, it looks like we had some kindergartners come in and do some sewing and some spelling for us," Scioscia said.
Riggs' uniform experience has been nominated as the year's "Most Bizarre Moment" for one of MLB.com's "This Year in Baseball Awards." Fans can vote here for Riggs or other award candidates until Dec. 2.
Last season more than 300,000 votes were cast in the inaugural "This Year in Baseball Awards." Alex Rodriguez took home top player honors while John Smoltz was voted the top pitcher in all of baseball. Voting for the 2003 awards ends on Dec. 2. Winners will be announced live on MLB.TV at 2 p.m. ET on Dec. 4.
