With baseball's annual Winter Meetings on tap beginning Monday, the Angels will be weighing trade possibilities, but they've already been busy with the acquisitions of center fielder Torii Hunter and starting pitcher Jon Garland.
Depth in the starting rotation and the outfield provide flexibility for new general manager Tony Reagins if something attractive surfaces. A power-hitting third baseman has been on the agenda, with Florida's Miguel Cabrera the big name getting shopped.
2007 finish: 94-68, first place, AL West; swept by Boston in ALDS.
Deals so far: Traded SS Orlando Cabrera to the Chicago White Sox for RHP Garland. Signed free agent CF Hunter (five years).
Players eligible for arbitration: INF Maicer Izturis, 1B Casey Kotchman, 3B Dallas McPherson, OF Juan Rivera, RHP Francisco Rodriguez.
Free agents: RHP Bartolo Colon.
Needs: There are differences of opinion as to whether the club still needs a power hitter in the aftermath of the Hunter signing. The question is how badly they covet a Miguel Cabrera or Miguel Tejada. It appears that management is content with Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis sharing shortstop with Cabrera's departure in the Garland deal.
Dealing strengths: A surplus of Major League-caliber talent in every department gives the Angels the opportunity to surrender three or even four players for one big-time talent, such as Cabrera or Tejada.
