Rips two more hits as Halos roll over A's in Cactus action
ANGELS 6, ATHLETICS 1
At Tempe, Ariz.
Monday, March 3
Angels at the plate: Two runs crossed in the first, as Chone Figgins and Garret Anderson singled and Torii Hunter crushed a triple to left-center off Rich Harden. Hunter also doubled in the fifth.
Casey Kotchman laced an opposite-field double off Justin Duchscherer and scored in the fourth, and also singled in the fifth.
Howie Kendrick singled and stole a base in the second and hit a two-run double in the fifth off Brad Ziegler, off whose wild pitch he scored.
Athletics at the plate: Chris Denorfia tripled over the head of right fielder Vladimir Guerrero leading off the third against Darren Oliver. While the safe play would've been to hold up at second, Denorfia forced the action and easily beat an errant relay throw. Donnie Murphy immediately followed with a sacrifice fly.
Angels on the mound: Starter Joe Saunders allowed one soft single in two scoreless innings, inducing four ground-ball outs. Dustin Moseley worked a perfect fourth and Kasey Olenberger followed with two scoreless innings.
Darren O'Day struck out three during a perfect seventh and eighth.
Athletics on the mound: Harden allowed four hits and two runs in three innings, but could have allowed none if a popup hadn't dropped in with two outs in the first.
Brad Ziegler struggled in the fifth, allowing three hits and three runs. Huston Street was sharp in the sixth, allowing a ground single to Gary Matthews Jr. but striking out two. Jeff Gray struck out one during a perfect seventh.
Cactus League records: Angels 3-1-1, Athletics 3-2.
Up next: The Angels travel to Tucson to face the White Sox at Tucson Electric Park. The Athletics host the Mariners at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
