ANGELS 5, D-BACKS 4
at Tempe, Ariz.
Saturday, March 15

D-backs at the plate: Jeff Salazar drove a two-out, three-run homer to right in the second inning, his first of the spring. Eric Byrnes crushed a mammoth homer to left, his second in Cactus League play, and Justin Upton and Chris Burke each had a pair of singles.

Angels at the plate: Matt Brown hit a leadoff triple in the 10th then came home with the winning run on a single by Juan Rivera. Brown also socked a game-tying homer to left in the eighth. Gary Matthews Jr. launched a solo homer off Randy Johnson to left field, his first long ball in Cactus League play. Torii Hunter doubled in two at-bats and actually watched his slugging percentage drop to 1.115 (29 total bases in 26 at-bats).

D-backs on the mound: Johnson's three innings would have been perfect if not for Matthews' towering homer. The Big Unit struck out two and was in the strike zone consistently, walking none. Yusmeiro Petit was touched for a pair of two-out runs in the fourth on three straight hits but worked two scoreless innings after that, striking out three.

Angels on the mound: Nick Adenhart was sailing along, having retired five in a row, when a pair of singles and Salazar's blast put him in a hole. He finished with three strikeouts in four innings, yielding three runs on four hits. Justin Speier pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

Cactus League records: Angels 10-6; Diamondbacks 6-12.

Up next for the Angels: The Angels have split-squad games scheduled for Scottsdale against the Giants' and Mesa against the Cubs, both starting at 1:05 p.m. PT. Jered Weaver (3-0, 2.00 ERA) hopes to continue his brilliant spring in his fourth start against the Giants' Matt Cain, while Nick Green (0-0, 3.86) makes his first start, and fourth appearance this spring, against the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano.

Up next for the D-backs: Dan Haren (0-0, 4.00) takes the mound at Tucson Electric Park, where he'll face the White Sox and Gavin Floyd. Haren, making his fourth start, has 11 strikeouts in nine innings. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. MST.
