Mathis out of Monday's lineup
Catcher given one more day of rest to recover from the flu
ANAHEIM -- Catcher Jeff Mathis took the mask off Monday afternoon, but not the one that comes to mind for a player at his position.
Mathis was ordered to wear a surgical mask in the clubhouse in Detroit before Sunday's game because the team was concerned that his flu-like symptoms would spread among the team. Mathis said Monday afternoon he felt strong enough and was pleased to not be wearing the mask.
"I had a mask on, that was real," Mathis said. "[Trainer] Ned [Bergert] told me to do that and gave it to me."
Mathis was originally in the starting lineup Monday. The Angels training staff evaluated him and decided that one more day of rest would be beneficial, so Mathis was scratched and Mike Napoli was inserted into the No. 8 spot in the lineup.
"We originally had him in, but re-evaluated and decided to give it one more day," manager Mike Scioscia said.
The good news for Mathis was that he was able to show his face in public again.
