October twice as exciting in SoCal

For the third time in six seasons, the Angels and Dodgers are in the postseason together, making Los Angeles the hottest two-team city in baseball when it comes to playing in October.

Whether that translates to a true Freeway Series for the first time remains to be seen, but L.A. is now right alongside the Bay Area and New York in dual postseason appearances since the Wild Card entered play in 1995.

With back-to-back years for the L.A. teams following the first Angels-Dodgers postseason in 2004, that combo has matched Yankees-Mets ('99, '00, '06) and A's-Giants ('00, '02, '03) for the most one-market double-dips since the two-tiered league playoffs began, with three.

The Bay Area rules overall since divisional play began in 1969, with the A's-Giants rivalry the only one to appear five times together in the same postseason. That includes 1971 and the 1989 World Series, which was interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Last year, Chicago saw both its teams reach the postseason for the first time since the 1906 World Series, won by the White Sox. The Cubs lost to the Dodgers and the White Sox lost to the Rays in their respective Division Series matchups a year ago, and neither reached the playoffs this time.
