Angels linked to Cuban shortstop
Halos said to be among clubs interested in defector
Having hit the jackpot with first baseman Kendry Morales and missed the boat with heralded southpaw Aroldis Chapman, the Angels reportedly have their sights on another Cuban free agent.
Quoting unnamed sources, ESPNLosAngeles.com reported that 19-year-old shortstop Adeiny Hechevarria, a recent defector, has drawn the Angels' interest. They joined about a half-dozen clubs in sending scouts to the Dominican Republic last week to watch him work out, according to an unnamed league source. The bidding, the story says, could reach eight figures. Chapman recently signed a $30.25 million contract with the Reds. An unidentified scout called Hechevarria "legit -- there's no doubt" after watching him work out. Hechevarria did not play for the Cuban national team but did play for several junior teams on the island. He lists at 6-foot and 160 pounds.
