WASHINGTON -- Nationals principal owner Mark Lerner was at a loss for words after Jayson Werth hit the game-winning home run to give Washington a 2-1 win in Game 4 of the National League Division Series.

The series is tied at two games apiece, and Game 5 will played Friday night at Nationals Park (8:30 p.m. ET on TBS).

"It took my breath away," Lerner said. "I don't know what to say about it. I'm still trying to get my breath back. It was amazing. It was great moment for all these fans who have come out and supported us.

"You talk about October legends that are born. The people in this area are never going to forget [this moment]. That will start the highlight reel when the season is over. Hopefully, that won't be for a while now."

Lerner said the turnaround of the Nationals started after the club signed Werth to a seven-year, $126 million contract in December 2010.

In his first year in Washington, Werth had arguably his worst season as a regular, but that didn't stop him from changing the culture in the clubhouse and teaching the young players how to play the game the right way. In fact, teammate Bryce Harper calls him "The captain."

"There are so many reasons Jayson turned this around," Lerner said. "He likes the pressure of the big games. He has been there -- playoffs, World Series, World Series champion. He knows how to get a club going in the right way. He has been so valuable in so many ways.

"I feel so great for Jayson and his entire family. The pressure on him the last two years has been enormous. This year, he started getting his mojo going. That's what you pay him for -- big moments like that. He loves them."
