SEATTLE -- Former Major League players Chris Woodward and Brant Brown have been hired by the Mariners as Minor League coordinators, and Alvin Davis -- long known as Mr. Mariner as one of the franchise's original stars -- has taken on a full-time role as a roving instructor, the club announced Thursday.
Woodward, 36, rejoins the Mariners as he takes on his first professional coaching role as the club's Minor League infield coordinator. Woodward is a 12-year Major League infielder who played for Seattle in 2009 and '10 and spent last season with Triple-A Las Vegas.
Brown, 41, will be the Minor League outfield and baserunning coordinator. The five-year Major League outfielder spent the past six seasons as a hitting coach in the Rangers' organization, including last year with Triple-A Round Rock in the Pacific Coast League after three years with Double-A Frisco and two seasons with Class A Bakersfield.
Davis, 52, joined the Mariners as a part-time roving Minor League instructor last season. He'll take on a full-time role now in that same capacity and will also work with the player development staff. Davis played first base for Seattle from 1984-91 and was the club's first inductee into the Mariners Hall of Fame.
The club also announced that Jose Moreno, 45, has been promoted to Latin America field coordinator after 12 years as a manager in the Mariners' farm system. He managed Pulaski in the Rookie League last year.
Javier Alvidrez, 37, an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator in the Yankees' player development staff the past five years, has been hired as the new Latin America athletic trainer coordinator.
"Chris and Brant bring a lot of knowledge, experience and passion to our staff," said Mariners director of player development Chris Gwynn. "Jose has spent the last 13 years as a manager in our system and will be an asset with developing our young Latin players, while the addition of Alvin full time will benefit all of our Minor League players."
Returning Minor League coordinators for 2013 are field coordinator Jack Howell, pitching coordinator Rick Waits, rehab pitching coordinator Gary Wheelock, catching coordinator John Stearns, hitting coordinator Lee May Jr., Latin America pitching coordinator Nasusel Cabrera and athletic trainer coordinator James Southard.
