Angels acquire infielder Alberto Callaspo from Kansas City in exchange for RHP Sean O'Sullivan and LHP Will Smith

ANAHEIM, CA -- The Angels Thursday acquired infielder Alberto Callaspo ("Ky-AWS-po") from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan and left-handed minor league pitcher Will Smith. Today's transaction was announced by Angels' General Manager Tony Reagins.

Callaspo, 27, returns to the Angels after playing at every level in the club's minor league system from 2001 to 2005. He was traded to Arizona in exchange for RHP Jason Bulger on February 28, 2006. Since 2008, the switch-hitter has played with the Royals, coming off a career season in 2009 (.300, 41 doubles, eight triples, 11 HR & 73 RBI).

This season, Callaspo has started 76 games at third base and is batting .275 (96/349) with 19 doubles, eight home runs and 43 RBI in 88 overall contests. In two-plus seasons with KC, the Venezuelan has appeared in 317 games (SS, 2B, 3B & OF) hitting .293 (334/1138) with 68 doubles, 15 triples, 19 home runs and 132 RBI.

He has also appeared in the Majors with the D-Backs, appearing in 79 games with the club from 2006-07. With the Halos, Callaspo with wear uniform #12. O'Sullivan, 22, spent all five of his professional seasons in the Angels' system. Originally selected in the 3rd round of the 2005 free agent draft, O'Sullivan has six separate stints in the majors posting a 5-2 record with a 5.15 (64.2 IP - 37 ER) ERA in 17 games (11 starts). In 2010, he split time between the Triple-A Salt Lake and the Angels. In 15 starts with the Bees this season, he is 5-5 with a 4.76 ERA (85 IP - 45 ER). During two stints with the Angels this season, he posted a 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA (13.0 IP - 3 ER) in five appearances (one start).

During his five minor league seasons, O'Sullivan is 42-26 with a 3.81 (560.1 IP - 237 ER). He was named the Angels' Organizational Pitcher of the Year in 2007 (10-7, 2.22), went on to top the Angels' farm system with 16 wins in 2008 and tossed the first no-hitter in Salt Lake Bees history, July 28, 2009. Smith, 21, pitched at all three levels in the Angels' farm system in 2010. He began the season at single-A Rancho Cucamonga where he posted a 2-2 record with a 4.58 ERA (37.1 IP - 19 ER) in six starts. Smith was transferred to triple-A Salt Lake, May 10, where he compiled a 2-4 record with a 5.60 ERA (53 IP - 33 ER) in nine starts. After being transferred to double-A Arkansas, June 25, he posted a 1-2 record with a 7.23 ERA (18.2 IP - 15 ER) with nine walks and eight strikeouts in four starts. Overall in 2010, he owns a 5-8 record with a 5.83 ERA (109 IP - 67 ER).

A native of Newnan, Georgia, Smith was selected by the Angels in the seventh round (229th overall) of the 2008 draft. He was a non-roster invitee to spring training this year.
