Weaver time set to take flight at Fenway

Los Angeles (71-50) at Boston (73-49), Saturday, 4:05 p.m. PT

Jered Weaver will try to draw on a positive experience from his last start against the Red Sox on Saturday, when he faces Curt Schilling and Co. at Fenway Park.

Weaver outpitched Schilling on Aug. 6 at Angel Stadium, but he didn't get credit for the 4-2 win, with Schilling absorbing the loss. Weaver went six innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits, while Schilling yielded four earned runs on nine hits in six innings. It was Schilling's return to the mound after he missed almost two months with a shoulder ailment, and he was jolted by Maicer Izturis' big home run.

"That's a good lineup," Weaver said of the Sox. "Any time you can hold them down and keep your team in the game, you have to feel pretty good."

Weaver was superb in the series finale against Minnesota on Sunday, tossing 7 1/3 innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs. He was extremely efficient, using only 93 pitches and employing an effective breaking ball that kept the Twins off balance for much of the contest. It was Weaver's first win since July 27, encompassing a stretch when he pitched well, but he wasn't getting much offensive support.

In his most recent outing, Schilling wasn't able to record a strikeout for just the fourth time in his illustrious career, but he put together an outstanding outing nonetheless in Baltimore. He allowed just five hits and one run, which was unearned. Reliever Eric Gagne surrendered a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, giving Schilling a no-decision.

Schilling dominated the Angels on April 14 at Fenway Park, shutting them out across eight innings and giving up four hits and one walk.

Schilling is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 11 career games (six starts) against the Angels.

Player to watch
Manny Ramirez can be troublesome for Weaver. The Red Sox slugger is a .429 hitter against Weaver, with four homers in 21 at-bats.
