A rare theft
Juan Rivera's steal in the second inning was his first of the season, and the first of his career in 30 postseason games. For his career, he now has 10 steals in 28 attempts. Rivera ran better early in his career, but since breaking a leg during winter ball after the 2006 season, he had just one stolen base in two attempts.
Dressed in full uniform, Red Sox icon Johnny Pesky was introduced with the team during pregame ceremonies at Fenway Park. The 90-year-old Red Sox Hall of Famer, whose No. 6 was retired on Sept. 28, 2008, has spent 58 of his 70 years in baseball with the Red Sox organization and remains an ambassador for the club.
Dick Williams and John McNamara both managed the Red Sox to the World Series. Williams took them there in 1967 when they lost to the Cardinals in seven games. McNamara was manager of the Red Sox when they lost to the Mets in seven games in 1986. Both Williams and McNamara also managed the Angels. Both lasted just over two years, had losing records and were fired without getting the Angels to the playoffs.
Gene Mauch managed the Angels to division titles in 1982 and 1986. He never managed the Red Sox but he was their Triple-A manager in 1958-59 and was Carl Yastrzemski's first tutor on how to play left field at Fenway Park.
Busy in Beantown
On a normal home day, there is heavy activity around Fenway Park. Add to it the attention of the playoffs, and throw in the B.A.A. Half Marathon, and traffic around the ballpark was extremely hectic on Sunday. Streets around Fenway were blocked off, causing many fans to take alternative routes getting to Game 3 of the American League Division Series.
