Bulger among 13 players granted free agency
By Lyle Spencer / MLB.com
Bulger, who turns 33 on Sunday, was 6-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 64 appearances for the Angels in 2009 and appeared in 111 games for them in parts of five seasons. He was 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake this season, with 49 strikeouts in 38 innings.
Bulger, a 2001 first-round Draft pick by Arizona, is joined in free agency by fellow pitchers Bear Bay and Eric Junge; catchers Cole Armstrong, Anel de los Santos and Orlando Mercado; second basemen Matt Cusick and P.J. Phillips; third basemen Jeff Baisley and Freddy Sandoval; shortstop Gil Velazquez and outfielders Paul McAnulty and Kevin Melillo.
Velazquez, 32, was a September callup by the Angels, collecting three hits with an RBI in six at-bats. He had brief stints with Boston from 2008-09 and enjoyed an outstanding season for Triple-A Salt Lake.
Sandoval, hampered by injuries in recent seasons, played briefly for the Angels in 2008-09 with three hits in 16 at-bats.
Phillips, a versatile athlete, is the brother of Cincinnati star Brandon Phillips.
