The Angels added pitchers Johnny Hellweg, Fabio Martinez and Ariel Pena and shortstop Jean Segura to their 40-man roster on Friday. The moves protect them from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 8, and all four will be in Major League camp in Spring Training next February.
Martinez, who has a plus fastball and slider, is one of the Angels' top pitching prospects who made just two August appearances this past year in Rookie League ball while trying to come back from a shoulder injury. Martinez, 22, was 7-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts and one relief appearance for Class A Cedar Rapids in 2010 while striking out 141 in 103 1/3 innings. But he also walked 6.62 batters per nine innings.
Hellweg, a 16th-round pick out of Florida Junior College in 2008, was 6-4 with a 3.73 ERA in 14 starts and 14 relief appearances for Class A Inland Empire this season. In 89 1/3 innings he allowed 75 hits and 59 walks while striking out 113.
Pena spent most of the season with Inland Empire and was 10-6 with a 4.45 ERA. He pitched 151 2/3 innings and allowed 154 hits and 81 walks while striking out 180. He was second in the California League in both strikeouts and walks.
Segura, after hitting .281 with 18 stolen bases in 44 games at Inland Empire, played in the Arizona Fall League. In 23 games, he is hitting .310 with 17 runs scored, six doubles, two triples and five stolen bases.
