Jose Rondon is getting a shot on a major stage. Rondon, the Angels' No. 5 prospect, has been named to the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game as an injury replacement for Astros prospect Carlos Correa. Rondon, a shortstop, is batting .333 with 17 extra-base hits this season for Class A Inland Empire.
A native of Venezuela, Rondon had never played above Rookie level before this season. The 20-year-old batted .293 last season for Orem in the Rookie-level Pioneer League, and he stole 13 bases in 68 games. Rondon is a career .299 hitter with a .352 on-base percentage in the Minors.
Rondon, who hits right-handed, has primarily played shortstop but has also seen some time at third base in the Minor Leagues. Rondon has just two home runs in 228 games in the Minors.
