ANAHEIM -- The Angels activated reliever Fernando Salas from the disabled list and optioned Michael Roth to Double-A Arkansas on Sunday.
Salas, who was nursing right shoulder inflammation, was supposed to make another rehab appearance with Class A Advanced Inland Empire on Sunday but instead returns to the Angels. He made his first rehab appearance on Friday, throwing a scoreless inning and striking out one.
"If he needed it, then obviously, we would have had him go and use it," manager Mike Scioscia said. "But he felt good coming out of it and instead of, what we feel, might be wasting some of his pitches down there, he feels ready, we feel he's ready, and we have a need in our bullpen for what he brings."
Salas has a 2.96 ERA in 28 appearances for the Angels this season, but none since June 14.
Roth, who was called up Saturday, earned the win in the Angels' 11-5 victory over the Astros by pitching two perfect innings of relief. It was the second straight season in which Roth earned the victory on the day he made his season debut.
David Freese was out of the lineup again Sunday with a sore left shin that he injured sliding into home on Friday.
Scioscia said Freese would be able to pinch-hit on Sunday and should return in the next few days. Freese launched a two-run pinch-hit home run on Saturday before being lifted for a pinch-runner later in the inning.
Scioscia said Freese would not have played the field Saturday even if the game was closer.
